Hey Grandma- just have Marianne or Nancy bring it back. I'm not sure what it's for, it might be Michael's. Thank you though and thanks again for having us!
Gosh, here it is Wednesday already! Nancy and boys are coming this weekend and we (Nancy and I) will probably go up to see Bobby on Saturday. Think Jane will be there and hopefully Marianne and family. Will be nice to see Jaida - what a sweety she is. Sounds like Ellen will be there too. Am looking forward to giving Bobby and Sal big hugs.

Dad just finished up a big framing project ($$$). He only charged what the materials cost and a little for labor but the extra $$$ is nice.

Catherine and Eric left their extension cord here. Let me know if I should give it to Nancy or Marianne to bring to Virginia Beach or just hang on to it.

I watched a premiere of a new series on HBO - "In Treatment" - it's 5 half hour segments a week about a psychiatrist and his half-hour sessions with patients - a different patient each segment. Very depressing and if I had to watch it again I would probably slit my own wrists!

gotta go - have a great day!

Hola

Well, its a windy day here. Actually a wind advisory in effect. I hope it blows the rest of my leaves to my neighbors' yards. Ha!

The porch guy came to finalize stuff, and its a long story, but we can't get a fence out of the deal, but supposedly, we can get a counter top. I don't believe it, but just in case, we picked out this:

I like others, but this is one of the only ones we could agree on. We need a new faucet, and perhaps a new sink, too, so we looked at those. Lowe's was empty at 9 last night, so we had the run of the place. I could spend thousands there. I want all new doorknobs and light fixtures! But, our goals for the year are porch, counters, landscaping and painting, so we'll stick with those.

My students are taking a test today, and I hope they studied. I have a feeling that they didn't. Oh, well. I gave them TWO study guides with basically all the answers. We never had those when I was a kid. We played a cool jeopardy game (its on a power point and easy to make Catherine, and would a good thing to add to your bag of tricks, if you teach in schools that can project the computer screen, or display on a TV) to review as well. And, its on the culture of the 20's and 30's which is fun and interesting, and I played them tons of music (Gershwin, Ellington, Armstrong, et al) and even showed them clips from The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath - which the other teachers didn't do. But it all comes down to today's test. If they don't do well, it will be hard for me to pull out all the stops on the next unit - World War II.

Anyone know a WW2 vet still living who would come to my school?

Have a nice day everyone! Oh, if I'm needed (or maybe even if I'm not) I'll go to Charlottesville to help Bobby and see our girl Jaida. I hope we can rally around and protect her from more harm. Kaiti was the same age in my divorce...and well, anyway, we love her and Bobby and we'll all be there.

Hi everyone! I am happy to report we have a NEW ROOF! thanks to Michael and Eric. They sure worked hard for 2 solid days and Dad and I marvel at the "feats of daring do" clomping around on that roof! They would stand on the very edge without so much as a glimmer of caution - of course, they are professionals who knew very well what they were doing. Now I can start cleaning up the upstairs computer room - it's really awful!

I got to know the girls better - Jane and Mark - you are so lucky to have Catherine and Zsuzsi in your family. Catherine spent a lot of her time doing her Statistics homework, besides helping in the kitchen - she did almost all of the dishwashing. Zsuzsi and I had a regular old gabfest - swapping family stories - some funny, some sad.

I am now reading "the zookeeper's wife" - a sad and true story about WWII. When Warsaw was bombed a lot of the zoo was destroyed and then totally dismantled by the Nazis. The zookeeper and his wife (gentiles) became part of the Polish underground and sheltered and smuggled out countless Jews. Similar to Schindler's list. A sad story and it's depressing me. I can only read a few paragraphs at a time.

I talked to Jane late Sunday afternoon and they were in Laredo waiting to unload first thing this morning and then will find out where they are going next.

Have a great day everyone!

(Eric takes first prize as mashed potato lover!).

bed hogs

Good morning everyone---

Ellen, it seems like i slept in the same boat you did. Had a very rough night last night thanks to you know the bed hogs in my house. Last night, Jamie had a trantrum when i changed the channel and watched something other than disney's
"minuteman". He took his Bruti to my room and locked the door and watched tv and fell asleeep in my bed. OK..so, had to have Joey help me unlock the door. I didn't have the heart to kick the hogs out...but did move em over. Went to sleep and woke up to having Jamie w/his head on my pillow, legs up in the air, leaning on me and Brutus under the blankets streeeeetch out accross the bottom of the bed and he was on is back. I couldn't even streetch my legs out, and was on the very edge of the bed. So of course i had to get up..move the hogs and then couldn't get back to sleep. So, i watched some nutty movie w/Syvester Stallone and a tunnel crash. Finally, rolled over and got a little more sleep, however Brutti decided he just couldn't help himself and streeched himself along my torso and licked my chin, hand or what ever he could lick...had to block my face....so when i woke up..it was almost 8 w/Jamie looking at me -- and telling me that "mom it's almost 8'oclock". So, here i am.
Hope you guys all have a good w/end. And, whoever works on the roof at mom's BE CAREFUL. And, Mom -- i took next Friday off. So, we can come up early. We'll be there on Friday early evening.

up early

and not even a school day. I hope to get back to sleep. Glad the dishwasher is in and the roof is being fixed. I'm not sure what we're doing today, but it probably includes cleaning up after wild animals who trash my house! I had to get up because Scott has five cats in bed with him and there is no room for me. When I get in there, they attack my face and hands or try to smother me. I think that they think he is their mama cat.

-take care everyone
Ellen
Am happy to report that our new dishwasher is finally installed and running properly - (knock on wood!). It was a 2 day battle involving lots of water and had me on the brink of tears several times.
Zsuzsi, Michael, Catherine, and Eric arrived last night at about 11 and we toddled off the bed around midnight. It was a long day for everyone. Eric brought his beautiful big Apple "whatever" to play his game but it's not compatible with our equipment.

Fritz was his usual yappy self when everyone arrived and even "nipped" at Michael! He settled down after a bit, and Michael layed on the floor and made friends with him.

You all will understand that I am very reluctant to mention a certain subject here but when I talked with Bobby last night he sounded much, much better. I am thankful for Marianne's level head and common sense - it made a huge difference to Bobby.

Love to all

We're going to TX

We are at the Norfolk ,International Terminal getting loaded-with rubber to take to TX, the load delivers on Monday so we have plenty of time, we should get there on Sunday.
Sorry I didn't call Cathering, I didn't read your blog till today.
I will make this short as I am still in a state over Bobby's phone call last night at 12:30 am. I am just killing some time before I call him again, I'll wait a few more minutes.
We had a short stop home, got the rx for Mark, only $137 I was worried it would be over $200,got a few groceries and then had dinner, Marianne and Christian came over too. Mark did laudry.
Ellen - Michael didn't sell the International - decided to wait cause he really didn't want to sell to junkyard - but he still needs to get rid of it, so if you could contact your guy again..Michaels ph 757-635-1498.
Ok I am going to call Bobby now
everyone takecare

Wow - Thought I'd have to put on sunglasses to read the blog today! But I love it - very 'spring' like! And the picture is adorable - can we have an enlargement?

We got a new dishwasher!!! It was $248 - I don't need all the fancy wash cycles on the more expensive machines - I have always used just the one setting - heavy wash, hot water, etc. Lowes charges $144 for delivery and installation as opposed to Home Depot's $55 - so we brought it home with us and Dad has read all about installation. He installed our old one so maybe he can do this one too. It is now sitting in the dining room sans carton and he will tackle it this afternoon. He has so much "male" pride - hope if he has a problem he will wait for Michael and Eric this weekend to help him, but I doubt it.

My assigned housecleaning chore today is vacuuming and dusting the dining room - isn't that exciting?! I really hate to clean. I remember in California I went so long between dustings that the coffee table had cobwebs on it. Tomorrow I will get dad to bring in the shop vac and clean up around the fireplace.

Ellen - I have not been working much on Katie's scarf - problem is Fritz likes helping me knit. I will try to get back to it. If I sit on sofa he feels entitled to be on my lap. If I sit on the bed he thinks he should "pull" yarn for me. I will try to get back to it.

Tell Scott he is a "TV" snob! Big screen, indeed! (But I do see his point). I really don't give a rat's ass about the superbowl unless the halftime show is good - but I probably won't even bother with that.

I am getting very nervous about "super tuesday" - the elections. I read a poll recently that showed John Edwards could win over any one of the republicans - how about that? I like all of the Dems and will vote for the democratic nominee whoever. With Hillary and Barrack slinging mud at each other, they just might turn the public towards John Edards.

Stay warm everyone!

Monday...err Tuesday

So, it was a Monday on a Tuesday today. I have grades due very soon, and guess what? I'm behind. As always. Kids were ok today. I had to have a conference with a parent and explain to her that her kid:
a) likes to walk around the room like Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp
b) likes to play the flute.....on his nose
c) sharpens pencils for 10 to 20 minutes
d) does not like to do any work
e) sent around a petition to have school close early due to weather
f) is actually funny as hell
g) almost forgot, likes to pull his pants up really high Erkel style

She just sat there stunned. I suggested some sort of after school activity that he could utilize all his talent and energy.

Had to teach about FDR today (btw Catherine, I have taught 6th grade Language Arts, but now its U.S. History) and it was cool to teach my little boy with cerebral palsy that we actually had a president with a disability and couldn't walk (well, FDR could walk a little).

I talked to Kaiti - I am not sure if she reads this blog. She spoke highly of her neo-romantics literature class, doesn't think she needs the practical reasoning class, and so far so good on everything else. She is still applying for transfers, but is okay with staying at RC since she knows she can double major without a problem. I don't care where she goes as long as she enjoys it. How is her scarf coming mom?

Oh, and on the International - the guy at school says Michael is kicked out of the International lovers club because no International lover would allow it to go to a junkyard knowing it would be crushed, and he was in touch with his buddies in VA Beach who are collectors. Oh well.

We may be taking a rain check on weekend after next as it is Super Bowl and Scott whined we'd have to watch the game on a little TV when we have the big screen right here. Any chance anyone wants to come here for Super Bowl?

I think Jane should tell us more about this strata of humanity known as truck drivers. Could be fascinating.

Our porch should be built very soon! And new front door and maybe a fence out of the deal since we switched to a different style.

Ok- bye for now.
Ellen
Jane- Give us a call when you guys get in. I have a class tomorrow night from 430-7 but if you do come in tomorrow night I'll stop and pick Eric up and come by after class. Tell Mark I said hi.. see you guys hopefully later this week!
love,
catherine
Jane - your post made me chuckle - there really are some people who believe that duct(k) tape can fix everything!

My turnovers didn't turn out. I was using filo pastry and I think it must have been past it's prime. Threw the whole kit and kaboodle in the garbage. Another flop from Wal-Mart.

We are in a winter storm watch and the sun is shining!!!! It's a little nippy out there - haven't been out myself.

I have a new plan of attack with housecleaning now - I assign myself ONE task every day (I usually decide the day before) and then MAKE myself do it. Today it was washing some bed linens and it's all done now so I can play the rest of the day. Dad and I are going to Lowe's - he got his credit card and probably is dying to use it. Welllllllll - if he wants to buy anything, it will be a dishwasher - YES!

I am getting a little fed up with my book - What the Dead Know - it is an interesting premise, but it is not linear by any means. Jumps around over a period of 30 years which makes it hard to follow. The chapters are relatively short, but for the first couple of paragraphs, it is not clear who it's about.

Fritzy boy is sleeping here at my feet. He is getting better about going outside - I just have to recognize the "signs." - and I don't mean the lifting of the rear leg - lol. He will come to me and give me a "balefull" look and if I walk to door he runs ahead of me and goes out - hurrah - we are getting somewhere (now that the carpets are all ruined).

Yes Marianne - I wish you would post here - would love to read about Christian's doings - he is so smart and funny besides. And have you started taking any courses yet? Start with an easy one. And how about Katie?? I think she probably has her time well taken up with studies and I understand she now has a job in the dining hall. Plus, there is always activity in a dormitory. But a quick hello would be nice.

Well goils - tata for now!

we will be leaving GA soon!!!

We will be leaving here today, thank goodness, sick of being here. We are at the usxpress terminal, and they don't let you leave with the truck unless you have a load or load assignment, they do have a van and will take you places though. We went to a chinese buffet last night, it was..o k...Another driver also came with us. She had gotten out of her truck..landed somehow wrong on her ankle and hurt her foot, she thinks it's broken.(Mark had asked her what happened when he noticed she had duck tape around her foot and a bad limp)...to me that's workers comp..why doesn't she go to the doctor???? I didn't ask her, but there must be a reason she doesn't want to go to the doctor.
Rambling along..we are supposed to be taking over a run going to Harrisonburg VA, it delivers at 3 am tonight.Mark is taking a nap now, he is snoring loudly.
We will hopefully be coming home too, Mark needs rx filled, so maybe tomorrow or thurs.
I am so glad to she Catherine blogging...tell the others we are coming home for us!!!
Shall I go on about freaky deaky druck drivers...ugh
I saw the movies titles from you blog mom..I will have to see if I can find copies to watch..haven't seen anything good since "Gone with the Wind" love that movie, I also want to watch An "Officer and a Gentleman". As for reading, now would be perfect, but I am online, and I can't read while we are rolling.
Mom how did your turnovers come out?
Marianne- are you reading this???? GIVE US A BLOG plz
Katie how about you ...are you reading this????tell us how college is
alright I will says bye for now
luv

Grandma- don't you worry about what we like to eat. Eric and I will pretty much eat anything you put in front of us..but that steak and chili sound delicious! You're right about the snow..I don't want those boys up there trying to fix a roof when its snowing and wind blowing and slippery..but the second they finish I hope there's a blizzard! See you in a few days!

Ellen-I'm reading this book called Teach Like Your Hair's On Fire by Rafe Esquith. I don't know if you've ever heard of it but its really good. When I'm finished with it, if you want I'll let you borrow it. Not too sure what made me want to but while I was reading I pretty much decided I want to be a 6th grade English teacher...I'm almost positive that's what you teach, if not correct me. But when it gets closer to me becomming a full time teacher maybe you can give me some pointers..any advice helps. If Kati has started reading either of those books will you ask her if she likes them for me? Thanks.

love,
catherine
It was 10 here last night! Still very cold. It was hard to get out of bed this morning! It's warmed up considerably now tho. Zsuzsi and Catherine - make sure you bring warm clothes next weekend. Both beds have electric blankets so you should be plenty warm sleeping, but during the day, even when it's 70 in here it seems cold.

Last night I climbed into my nice warm bed to watch the Amazing Race. I fell asleep sometime during House Hunters(!) and woke up about 9:30!!! Went out to the den and Dad was still watching football (endless football - it went into overtime!). Fortunately I had TIVO's the Amazing Race so I waited for game to be over and settled down to watch it. I was pleased with the winners too, they were my favorites, but I did like them all. I think TIVO is the smartest thing we've bought in a long, long time.

I watched Wives and Daughters (Netflix) last week. It was a BBC production and I enjoyed it a lot. I have Juno on my list but it hasn't been released on disc as yet. I have ordered The Palisers (another BBC production) that is 12 discs long. I watched it about 20 years ago and loved it. Ellen, if you have never watched Jewel in the Crown, order it up from Netflix. It is sooooo good - when it was originally on PBS I taped it and watched it several times. When we joined Netflix it was the first thing I ordered and said a few (*^^*&*^)(*& words when it was over. It is marvelous! Another one I never get enough of is 4 Weddings and a Funeral.

I am heading for the kitchen now - another adventure in cooking - cherry turnovers ala the Barefoot Contessa - hers were apple, but I only have cherry pie filling. shouldn't make any difference should it?

I made another quiche Saturday nite - really, really good and enjoyed leftovers for lunch.

Love to all -

still in GA

We are still in GA waiting for the truck to be worked on...they said this afternoon.
Ellen try indeed.com then do a search, found out some junk on usaa. Its people comments and so forth. I have no other favorites. Hey mom can you help me out with driving instuctor for Mark at ssvcc, looks like no vacancies to me, I don't know if you can still put in a resume or application.
We will be going home for a few hours soon, have to get Marks rx filled...and more$$$, guess we should wait for payday. Since we are waiting here can't afford to go home for a few days too..oh well
Michael is finally going to part with his project car that he doesn't work on..the
International..yippee..he's selling it to a junkyard.

Well thats all I have for now.
love
mark and jane

9 degrees

That is without wind chill. Wow.

I'm off today for MLK day. I'm planning on doing some cleaning, some school work, and then meeting a friend for coffee at 3. Scott has to go to work.

I saw Juno yesterday. It was a good movie. I laughed.

Missed Amazing Race because I was so into the football game. I read who won, and I am happy. I won't post it in case Mom TIVO'd it.

Scott made Jambalaya last night - it was excellent - cept now I has gaseous explosions.

So, I think I've seen everything on the internet - my new fave site is www.icanhascheezburger.com

what are your favorite sites??? Post links so I can find something new to waste time.

hello everyone from Cold GA

We are in Tunnel Hill GA, at the usxpress terminal. The truck needs to have its
preventative maintnence done on it.
We have done our laundry and took showers.Talked to another truck driver person in the bathroom, she had only one grey tooth on top and bottom were all grey, and there were a few other people...it disgusts me....well anyway we have made chilli for our dinner and I am going to get ready for a literati marathon.
We don't know where we will be going next, probably won't know till tomorrow or later.

Snow

Well, we got a tad bit of snow last nite. My cars were covered w/the white stuff and the grass was sprinkled w/the white stuff too. Joey took some picture of the snow too. I don't know if the streets are good or bad to drive on, but, i've informed the boys i'm leaving ==running away this morning b/c they are driving me fricking nuts. And, i'm taking Bruti w/me.

As for brussel sprouts and not home made mash potatoes, i'll starve.

Ellen, we are planning to come up the w/end after next too...Maybe we can do something??? Movies, Dinner out? Think about it.

Ok, i'm off for now. Gotta do a few things before i run away ==play literati and get dressed!!

Have a good day -- and where are the truckers? The were headed to Georgia yesterday.
We went to Midlothian yesterday and got enough floor tiles to do the upstairs bathroom. Tried to buy a new dishwasher - $249 plus $55 delivery charge and they install it too!. However, they won't deliver it this far away, so I will go to Lowe's this week and check what they have in the way of dishwashers.

On the way home we stopped at the Cumberland Library and I donated a couple of hardbacks to them and checked out "what the Dead Know" by Laura Lippman. It's not the usual kind of book I read but so many people in my reading group listed it as one of their top reads for 2007 I thought I would give it a try. I just finished Ivan Doig's latest - "Whistling Season" - a lovely, lovely book which Dad really enjoyed too. Anything by Ivan Doig is an outstanding read. Ellen - he has a Ph.D. in history! He writes about Montana about 100 years ago - very interesting. I am saving up my Barnes & Noble gift certificates for some that are coming out this summer.

Dad informed me early this morning that he would be too busy watching football that I needn't both cooking - Hurrah! Said he would just snack in front of t.v.

I know what kind of food we WON'T be having this coming weekend - brussel sprouts, and Jimmy Dean mashed potatoes - am saving them for Nancy's visit!

YooooooooHooooooooooooo - Jane, where is you?

take care everyone - stay safe.

and hurrah for Hillary - YOU GO GIRL!

Farmville is fun~

Put Scott and I on the calendar for weekend after next. We can celebrate mom's bday and 51st anniversary at the same time.

I need something to read. Today was errand day. The go to the book store errand got put at the bottom, so I didn't make it there. I started "Gold Coast" but must admit, like Ruth Rendell, if I don't read each and every Peter Robinson I'll go mad. I sort of quit my book club here in Fburg, so I was thinking we could start a family book club. If not, I'll start one amongst my teacher friends. I have a "to be read" stack that is a mile high.

Since our big "fight" things have been better with Scott and I. He is realizing that as companions, we need to make time to do things together AND take care of the house, etc. He suggested we go look at antiques in town today, so we braved the very cold temps and looked at antiques. We had in mind to find a desk, and we saw tons. I found some sheet music from World War I with decorative colors and I was thrilled to spend 20 bucks on several original pieces ranging from "Over There" to "I'll be True to the Regiment" It was fun to look around at all the antiques.

We then went to every furniture store around and decided on a modernish/import piece at World Market as a desk. Baskets for filing, and it looks like out of a magazine. We didn't buy it, as one of our resolutions was no impulse buying and to pay cash if possible. We love World Market - reminds me of Mediterranean (sp?) Market in Carmel in a way --- which was closed down by the way when we went - my favorite store - oh well. After a brief run through PetSmart for litter bags we made it home to try our goodies from the market, but Scott needs to nap first. LOoooooong day. Oh, if you have a World Market in VA Beach, they have hard to find European stuff.

The jaunt through World Market reminded me of another resolution - to get passports. My friend Doro wants me to go to Germany someday with her and I'd be stupid not to take her up, but I need money and a passport. I am making all my tutoring money go to my travel fund. Tutoring, btw, is a great way to make some cash, Catherine (and Zsuzsi and everyone else). People will pay at least 20 bucks an hour for you to do homework with their kid. I get 38 an hour from my school, but that is because I have a license.

Well, I am going to try my new salami and wake up Mr. Snore. Oh, Zsuzsi, your're necklace came - I'll get to you some time - its cute!

***it's snowing****

:-) Ellen

Friday, January 18, 2008

Hi Catherine - happy to see your post here and we are looking forward to next weekend too. Grampa has stocked up on roofing materials including plywood and now that we have a new Lowe's in town we can always run there to get anything that's needed. As for snow - lol - hope not - wouldn't be fun working on the roof under those conditions - probably impossible. Tell me your favorite meals and desserts. We'll have steak one night and perhaps chili. I know Michael is not fussy and Szuszi eats like a bird, but I want to have the place stocked with favorites.

Our snow is all gone today. There was a little this morning and the roads were fine, but nothing left now. After the roof is fixed it can snow all it wants - hope for a blizzard the next day! One year a light snowfall was predicted and we woke up to 22 inches! Couldn't get the doors open until we broomed the snow out of the way. I went to the middle of the yard with my yardstick and measured. That was fun.

I have been doing some spring cleaning - have the den all done. I think Grampa will have a new recliner soon and then his nasty old chair as well as his mother's nasty old chair are going to the dump!

We are going to Midlothian tomorrow - Grampa has it in his head that we need something at Home Depot. I don't care - I get to go to Barnes & Noble :)
Well, its official..

Michael, Zsuzsi, Eric and I are coming up to Farmville next weekend. I'm excited! I hope that its snowing a lot since we don't get snow down here I'd like to see some. I think we are leaving after work on Friday..I might take off early :)
love,
catherine

Thursday, January 17, 2008

Well it's noontime here and now we have about 2-3 inches of snow on the ground and rain coming down. Fritz was awake before Sandi (who loves the snow) and stared out the door looking puzzled. He licked up a flake from the doorstep and just backed right on inside. Later when Sandi got up she did her usual - big long look, nose to the ground, making like a snowplow thru the yard. Fritz did follow her out, went under the nearest shrub and then scurried off to the woodshop to take shelter underneath where it was still dry. Poor baby! Guess he won't be going out any more today - lol.

Waiting...

For the announcement that schools are closed. I know it is not snowing yet, but there is a winter weather warning and I REALLY need to stay home. Once I get in that shower, I won't be able to sleep and so I'll of course just go to school. If the storm hits and I have to drive home in ice, I don't know what I'll do. I'm going to pack an overnight bag in case I have to stay up there. Come on cancellations!!!

Oh, well, off to the shower I go. :-(
Hey there - the first time I ever heard of Marion, Indiana (or is it Illinois?) I was a child riding a train with my father to St. Louis to visit my grandmother. I must have been about 6 years old because as I recall I was just beginning to read. My mother had packed little gifts for me with the names of towns we would pass thru and instructions to let me open each one as we passed thru that town just little gifts - crayons, coloring book, lifesavers, etc. When I saw the name Marion on a package it caused much excitement - couldn't seem to understand it could be the name of a town and be my name at the same time.

Enough tripping down memory lane. Weather forecast for today is rain, ice, snow, sleet, fog, etc. starting early morning. Guess the weathermen have everything covered just in case. However, it is now early morning and nothing is happening! lol. Wondering how Fritz will like the snow. I would guess that he would absolutely hate it. He refuses to go out in rain. Now Sandi is different - she loves the snow. Will race out the back door, nose buried in the snow and "plow" a furrow as she runs as fast as she can. I guess having all the hair makes the difference. As for me, I like to sit in the warm den, and gaze at the snow, never venturing out.

Okay everyone - have a great day - luv ya all!

here in Marion In

they sent us to Lebanon, but we were supposed to go to Marion, which is another 100 miles away..cold here 21 degrees, some snow on the ground, but it's sunny. Now we are going back to Lincoln RI. I have lost all my games, score is down to 1870..omg..
Marianne says we had snow at home..but it did not stick, just flurries in the air.
Nothing else new to report.
take care

Hilary is the ticket................

Ellen, More power to ya.......you're right on!!! You should be up on the stage w/Hilary and run her campaign-- you would have the voters all on the right track.
I did check to make sure i don't have to register again as they had a place set up at GEICO for people to register. SO, i'm set...can i cast 100 votes for Hilary?

Mom--If we could get a tix w/Hilary as Prez and Obama as Vice Prez i would think thinks would change in America in a heartbeat and for the better of all Americans!!!

And, lastly, yes we did make it to the car show, there must have been over 100 different kinds of cars ---Jamie died and went to heaven. He was more than just thrilled. He was able to sit in any car there--in the driver's seat. He even told the rep from INFINITY that the red G37 was made for him. He gave the rep a laugh as well as me==told him to save his $$$$ as it's more than i can afford. I picked up a lot of brochures for him to look at in the meantime.

Don't know if we'll make it this weekend --still broke!!! I'll get back to you on that.

Love ya alllllllllllllllllllll
I only made it through half the debate, but have it TIVOed to watch again. I was pretty drowsy for the part I did watch, but thought Hillary really did stand out, although the unofficial poll at Daily Kos has Obama winning the debate. I have been reading Media Matters over the past few days about Hardball and Chris Mathews and his hatred of Hillary. Now that site has pointed out some unfairness on the part of Tim Russert toward Hillary on Meet the Press this past Sunday. I have always "sort of like/disliked Russert - he looks like the devil - just needs some horns. Wouldn't a ticket with Hillary as pres. and Obama as vice pres. be a sure winner?!! And a cabinet post for John Edwards.

I am trying to do some "spring" cleaning and have the den all torn apart. What used to take me a day is now taking 4 days. I suppose if I didn't spend so much time on the computer I would accomplish a lot more. Today I have to more the big cabinet with the t.v. in it - totally filthy. Fritz gets really scared when I start shoving around furniture.

Say, Nancy - did you get to the car show this past weekend? Where was it and what kind of cars were exhibited? I'll bet Jamie loved it. And are you coming up here this weekend? There is snow in our forecast - we'll see if it materializes.

Talked to Jane on Monday and they were headed for Indiana! Haven't heard anything since.

Have a great day everyone.

Debates - thank you Hillary

The media keeps asking bullshit questions about race and bickering between candidates. Just as I was yelling at the TV, an audience heckler echoed me. Then Hillary responded. Here we are with an unjust neverending war, an economy in a shambles, health care crisis, education and global warming to worry about and they are asking if Obama should have said whether or not Hillary is "likable". Give me a fucking break! It doesn't matter who is likable and if the Dems don't get that, then we deserve to lose.

But, Hillary brought the discussion right back around to those issues I just listed. Wow. She can hear me through the TV.

Edwards brought me to tears so far, and Obama has impressed me, as has Hillary. Let's just vote for all three because we need to beat the war-mongering, greedy oil piggish, hateful, Constitution ignoring G.O.P.

If you read this blog, register to vote and for the sake of all that is America, vote AGAINST the G.O.P. Vote any one of the three: Hillary, Barack, or John. (pssst....Hillary would do the best actual job if she can win.....but we must consider who can win and historically women have stepped aside for the rights of blacks: Abolition, 13th, 14th, 15th amendments, Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act were all to benefit blacks and all done while only one: 19th amendment was for women, and the ERA didn't even get passed and one can argue that all those advancements for blacks could not have been made without women working for them - Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, etc. - end of history lesson. )

--still undecided and pissed off -- Please vote. And, take a friend. Imagine this: Our grandmothers were born during the time women couldn't even vote.

I'm a little

Cranky. Mostly I am sore. I took an exercise class with free weights and music and a bunch of people in a mirrored room and now I hurt.

The coffee this am is good, and I am having a piece of gluten free raisin toast. I accidentally bought gluten free - its a little wierd, but I don't want to throw it away.

I have a ton of work to do today at school, plus teach after school. Fun.

I can see on the news that New England took all our snow, but we may get freezing rain on Thursday night, which would give us a four day weekend. MLK day on Monday.

Well, I am going to take a hot bath and get ready for school. Happy Tuesday.

Who's CRANKY?

lots of snow here

the snow started sometime overnight....I don't know how many inches..but alot..there is a large area across the way..looks like they take excess snow and load it on too dump trucks and dump it there, I have never seen that before.
When we get finished unloading here we will be going to West Waterbrige MA and taking it to Bronx ny. I heard on the radio that I95 speed limit is 40 because of the weather..ok thats it for now ..cause mom is on the phone.

I'm not cranky either

We arrived in Woonsocket around 9 this morning ..we have been taking our time cause this load does not deliver until tormorrow. We are parked in front of the plant..the guard says they make plastic containers, anyway we have some chemicals for them. The plant is closed until morning. They are expecting snow to start tonight, not sure how much..the weatherchannel.com says heavy snow starting at 3am until about 12 noon.
We had a great time at mom's for her birthday..and she didn't eat much of my meatloaf - so I don't think she liked it as much as her own. We fed the horses and me and mom picked up some horse poop..dad helped a little.
Eric and Catherine and Michael and Zsuzsi are going to mom and dads the weekend after next to fix the roof..hope all goes well with that.
Ok now Mark is ready to go for a walk
take care everyone
love
jane

Cranky

Not me, but some people seem to be. I check the blog compulsively. I keep waiting for Jane to post and tell us where she is. I expect a post everyday from her if only to say: Shreveport, LA.

Speaking of LA, that marine from Camp LeJuene (sp?) who is on the run after killing the woman he raped and impregnated was spotted there. You should read the CNN article on it. Awful. Sad.

So, Kaiti is currently in Charlottesville, driving to Lynchburg. She is not happy about going back which is sad. She is taking some interesting courses, so I hope they work out and that she gets a fun JOB so she can buy herself some cool stuff and save for an apartment wherever she lands next.

I worked out at the gym today! I did a high impact free weight workout with a friend. It was hard and I was the oldest and fattest there. I hope the french bread and veggie soup I'm about to have won't spoil my hard work. I was craving mom's vegetable soup today, but I remember growing up and for some reason I hated it --only liked the Campbell's.

We have an icy rain coming down now, so a hot bowl of soup and hot bread sure sounds good. We're watching football, and the NY/Dallas game is good!

Ok - people start posting and it is fun to read about what we're doing even if it is not extraordinary. Oh - and mom, I saw a lady on Dr. Phil who is crazier about her dog than you are about Fritzie. She chews his dog bones for him and spits them into his mouth. Dr. Phil actually just gave up on her.

Ok- back to empty nest boredom bliss.

-ellen
p.s. please do a snow dance for me.

FYI

I read the blog everyday---I just have nothing of interest to day..so please POST. It's nice to see you tell us what is happening.

Where are the truckers? And, where is the Queen of good laughs? And, where are the kids? I assume they read too and can say a line or two...
Since it appears that I am the only person posting here, I am assuming that no one is reading this blog. Therefore, I am no longer posting here.

Jane and Mark left here about 9 this morning headed for Kingsport, Tennessee. They will pick up a load there and transport it to Woonsocket, R.I. They had a load of macaroni and gave us a case. It's cute little cars and would look nice in soup. Will give some to Marianne for Christian and some to Nancy for the boys' macaroni and cheese.

Jane and Mark did all the cooking while here - nice break for me not to mention all the good food. Best was the big chocolate cake! Mark climbed around on the roof and reattached all the rain gutters. Had fun riding around in the big red truck - Mark can even parallel park the thing!

Am playing literati now and then will have a small siesta! Ah, the pleasures of old age - lol.

Love to all and a big thanks to Jane and Mark for all they did.

Thursday, January 10, 2008

Okay - here is my daily post! Today we went in Mark's big truck to town - fun. Visited the new Goodwill Hah! - and I bought one 69cent mirror to go with my collection. Then we toured the new Lowes - very nice, followed by lunch at Long John Silver's - hadn't eaten there in about 30 years. I just played my Literati game (lost) and Jane is on her laptop paying bills. It's raining and when we got home Dad opened door first and out raced Fritz to greet me. However, he HATES rain, so he got as far as me yelping all the while, made an immediate u-turn and raced back inside the house. He is so funny. Sandi came to greet me too and stayed out a little longer - her hair is longer so she doesn't feel the rain right away. Jane and Mark will be on the road again tomorrow, but they don't know where they'll be going yet.

Aunt Nancy called this morning - the only news of note is that Tom remarried. He had been seeing a woman in British Columbia who has 3 children and they were married in October and had a baby in December. She said Brendan is thrilled to have a baby brother and seems happy to have a big family now. Tom sold his house in Philadelphia and has moved to B.C. so she will not be seeing much of Brendan, but he calls her frequently. Let's hope they live happily ever after!

Getting offline now to have a little snooze - all that lunch food has made me sleepy.

Love to all
Mom

Jane and Mark are here! They arrived about noon yesterday. Mark fixed all the gutters - I hid inside prepared to dial 911 if I heard a crash! Don't know what we will do today - looks like rain.

We watched Gone With the Wind last nite - jane was the only one who made it to the end. I enjoyed what I watched - the first half, even if it was about the sixth of seventh time I've watched it. I remember watching it once with Marianne.

I fell asleep before the final results of the New Hampshire primary were in so when I woke up at 2 A.M. I had to get up and turn on the T.V. to see who won. I like all the Democratic candidates and didn't think I really cared which one of the 3 won. But I felt a real surge of joy when I heard the Hilary had won. I really think that she is the best qualified to lead our country now. But if she is not the nominee I will happily support whoever is. I think John McCain is the best of all the Republicans, too.

Am getting offline now - have a wonderful day.

Love,
Mom

P.S. Ellen - Jane and I are going to wash Sandi today - lol.

we got to visit bobby and shannon

We are here at walmart dc in gorgonsville, it's not going well, got here at 5:15, they are now saying we are late-appointment was at 5:15 late appointment at 3 this afternoon. They said Mark was here at the unloading at 5:15, they have it stamped for 5:31. They also had us hire a lumper at $50. It's now 8:40 and we are still here-lots of other trucks too. We came here yesterday, and they said we could only come back at appointment time.....anyway we had a nice visit with jaida and shannon and bobby and sal, had delious pizza at the restaurant...then back to the truck. We should be at moms sometime tomorrow, even though we are very close right now, they won't just let us take off today. We will have to wait and see.
I will have to make the quiche!
love
jane and mark...(mark has been really bad..mom)
Today I have a doctor appointment at 11 A.M. for a fasting blood sugar test. I am not suppposed to eat breakfast, so of course I woke up extra early today and will have to starve all morning. I will be grocery shopping afterwards and, no doubt will load up my cart with all the wrong things. Besides which, Dad has his train club dinner meeting tonite which means i can pick out something for me for dinner - got any suggestions. Has to be something I don't have to use pots and pans for - like a T.V. dinner. Maybe a Boston Market pot pie. (Can you tell I am hungry already?). I have a Netflix video here to watch this evening. T.V. has been so awful lately - I tried to watch Jon & Kate last nite and couldn't stand all the crying, screaming kids.

Have a great day everyone!

Quiche Recipe:

I pie shell - I use pre-made store bought
1 tomato thinly sliced
1 1/2 cups swiss cheese grated
4 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 zucchini sliced thinly the 'long' way
chevre cheese (goat cheese)

Layer tomatoes in bottom of pie crust, top with swiss cheese, combine egg and milk and pour over cheese. Layer top with sliced zucchini (I zapped my slices in microwave for 1 minute first.) Top with rounds of chevre and bake at 350 - my recipe said 30 minutes but it took longer - more like an hour. You'll know it's done when it doesn't "wiggle" in the middle. ENJOY!

Quiche

Post recipe, please.
I am happy to report my quiche was successful! While Dad only said it was okay, that is a positive comment from him, and he did eat it. It is a different kind of quiche - no bacon - and if anyone wants it let me know and I will post it here.

I am reading Comfort Me With Apples by Ruth Reichl. She is a food editor/restaurant critic and this is about her early career. Very interesting but a little dangerous to read for those of us who struggle with weight.

Watched both debates last night. The Republicans got kind of nasty with each other - lol - what a sorry lot they are. Fred Thompson just looked incredibly stupid and befuddled. Thought all the Democrats did very well except Richardson. He just is not very articulate. I am sorry that Dodd and Biden have dropped out. I think Dodd is a genuine Stateman and with Biden debating there was always humor. Oh well.

Time to get off line and get serious here.

Love,
Mom

Thanks for the menu suggestions Nancy. I am making a quiche tonite - sounds a lot like your recipe except it is in a pastry shell. We had a shouting match in front of the meat case at Wal-Mart this morning. Me: "just tell me what you want to eat and I will fix it." Dad: You know I just like plain food" Me: Well you plan a week's menu, buy it and cook it then." End of argument. I did get a pork loin - the Barefoot Contessa cuts up carrots, onions, and potatoes and rolls them in a little olive oil, salt, and pepper, then plunks a pork loin on top of the veggies and roasts it all together. Looked good when she made it. She put a marinade on top of garlic and mustard, but i'm not doing that. Don't like garlic on pork.

Have a great day everyone.

Good day to ya mates

Hey there---it's nice and quiet for the moment. Both Joey and Jamie along w/Bruti are sleeping, peace for me. Since Xmas both boys have been playing the ps 2 more because they bought new games. And it's a fight!!! Told em last night i'm taking the ps 2 and i'm gonna break it to smitherns if they can't play nicely. That shut them up for all of 20 minutes.

It's cold here, like everyone else. And, i'm sure it's colder where the Truckers are -NY? I want to walk at Mount Trashmore or the Beach front..but to collldddd for my bones. It's a nice comfy 70 inside and i'm still cold!!! The only person the cold doesn't seem to affect is Jamie - he'll go naked if i let him.

Mom - here is a suggestion for new food ideas -try looking at the meats and veggies dept at the store - they sometimes publish recipes for food ideas. That might help you. Also, online at the food channel web site. I made a new dish for the boys the other nite..it's a fluke, but the boys loved it...scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese, onions and tomotoes, and put it all on a tortilla. It's ok for me - but new for the boys and they loved it. Beef tips also - just plain and simple..let the meat cook, and then pour over wide egg noodles. The boys love this. AND---maybe you should tell Dad to do the cooking one night a week --make it a challenge for him. You both cook a new meal one time a week. That might keep Dad from his food looks and comments.

ugt oh, guess who just woke up---Jamie.

Ok, just a brief thought for my new years resolution - really didn't make any, but, i will try to keep loosing weight. Try to keep my desk up -close those files! And, lastly - find a new man??? what do you guys think---should we have a poll for that Ellen?

Ok, toodles to you guys. Keep warm and enjoy yourselves. haha
I will try to post here everyday even tho my life is pretty dull. It is still cold - but somewhat warmer than the last few days. Still doing some cleaning/laundry, etc. I got brave last nite and was going to serve bean soup from the freezer, but Dad and I both didn't want it. We ended up with omelets - good for the diets, blood sugar, etc., but didn't help the cholesterol (not that I care!).

Today I will have to clean up Sandi - poor old girl. It is too cold outside so will do it in the kitchen. I cannot lift her into bathtub, but will have to put a leash on her for Dad to hold her still in the kitchen while I sponge her. Yuck, but I'm sure she will feel better afterwards - as will I.

I have to do a little grocery shopping today and decide what to fix for dinner. It is a BIG problem. I am sooooo tired of fixing the same old things and Dad does not adapt to new stuff at all. I am thinking of making a quich. My friend who lives in France has posted a recipe that looks intriquing - has tomatoes and zucchine in it. Will also make a zucchini fritter from Ina Garten's cookbook. I will probably end up eating it alone - Dad can have his usual peanut butter sandwich.

My Barnes & Noble order came yesterday and now I have another decision to make - lol! I ordered 3 books of authors that I love - Ivan Doig, Ann Patchett, and Richard Russo, plus The Magnificent Amerbersons - which I have always wanted to read. BTW - Katie have you finished reading your Christmas books yet? Remember I want to borrow them.

I have some unpainted Santas that I will fix for Marianne. I have painted so many of them in years past that I have a hard time making myself paint more. But, I have a whole year to work on them!

I am so glad the Iowa caucus is over with. Now we just have to listen to the spiel from New Hampshire. I think it's great that Obama won, but I do like John Edward's platform better. It will be a very interesting political year. Just wish the news channels would tell us what is going on in the rest of the world! I must remember to tune in BBCAmerica once in a while for world news.

Okay everyone - enjoy your Saturday!

Mom

Friday, January 4, 2008

Well, well, well. I wrote a long blog here this morning and it's not appeared. Never happened before. Oh well - here goes again.

Cold, cold, cold. It's okay in the house but the problem is Fritz - won't step foot outside - can't blame him really and of course there's sprinkle tinkle all over. Sandi has had a stomach upset (and not the throw-up kind either!) Hope it's not contagious. She has always been so good that I can't bear to even yell at her - I know she can't help it - but I am tired of scrubbing spots off carpet!

Girls, you will laugh at this - last night I made linguini with clam sauce - yum! I didn't tell dad ahead of time, (knew he would say NO!) - I just plopped it down in front of him and watched. First came the pathetic look at his plate and then the questioning look at me. He wouldn't dare say anything - last time he complained I banged my fist on the table and scared him to death - lol. Tonite it's Senate Bean Soup which has been in the freezer (am I pushing my luck?).

Jane - did I tell you I bought myself a new "bird girl"? Anyhow, it's made of concrete and weighs about 500 lbs. - it's BIG. Dad and I managed to slide it off the back of the truck and it's now resting on the sidewalk. We are waiting for you and Mark to help us set it in the garden. Hernias are verboten.

Time to get offline and back to scrubbing (getting ready for Mrs. Clean's visit doncha know).

love to all
Mom

Here is your lost post mom -it was in manage posts, then drafts.

Okay, I will post but I warn you - my life is very quiet and dull - nothing much going on. It is quite cold - so cold in fact that I haven't even stepped out the door for two days.

I watched some of the Iowa caucus last nite - am I ever glad that is over with. CNN and MSNBC had nothing else on for 2 days. Isn't there any other news in the world? I really thought Hilary would come in first, but can't say I'm disappointed in Obama's win. I was hoping for John Edwards, but he still has a chance at winning the nomination. Ellen has a slew of Huckabee jokes and was getting hysterical with laughter last night. Glad Huckabee won - the worst Democat is better than the best Republican! Don't think Huckabee would have a chance in november.

Have been doing lots of housecleaning - Jane and Mark are coming next week and you all know how Jane is!! (Mrs. Clean!!). I FORBID HER TO DO ANY CLEANING WHILE SHE'S HERE!!

I've had a grand time with Barnes & Noble gift certificates this week. It gets complicated - first I have to check with the library to see if they have the book I want, then I check with paperbackswap.com to see if I can get it from them, and lastly, I order from B&N. I have 2 orders on the way - am saving the rest for later - Ruth Rendell and Elizabeth George both have new ones coming out this summer. Jane - I order a DVD of Gone With the Wind for you! I have seen that movie 5 or 6 times and always enjoy it.

I am reading Purple Hibiscus right now - about half-way done. It is written by a Nigerian author and takes place in Nigeria. It is pretty interesting but has "bogged" down now in the middle. Will give it a big push today and try to finish it. Want to be ready to tear into the B&N order the minute it arrives.

Sandi has had a tummy upset but is okay now. It wasn't fun while it lasted. She has always been so good that I didn't feel it necessary to scold her when she couldn't make it outside. Yuck - can't believe I'm discussing this at six o'clock in the morning! Now let's hope it's not catching - Fritz doesn't give a you know what where he goes and HATES going outside in cold weather or rain.

ok, Ellen's blog:

We had chicken tenders (I ate one), rice, butternut squash, and green beans for dinner. Delish. I wish I had Nancy's recipe for the butternut squash she did at Christmas.

My house is a wreck, but I tidied up tonight a bit.

I have been good on a diet for 2 days.

I worked out yesterday at the gym, and did 20 minutes at my target heart rate.

I have three new students. One psycho, one criminal, and one angel. Just my first impressions.

I am teaching the Great Migration then the Harlem Renaissance.

Its cold here - today with windchill = 11.

Saw Charlie Wilson's War - good flick

Going to see Juno this weekend, maybe.

Loving my book, but no time to read it much. My book invited me back, so going to try to read Special Topics in Calamity Physics.

I love the website: www.icanhascheezburger.com

My marriage is boring since I am ignored the majority of the time. He doesn't want counseling. Blah.

Our screened porch should be started soon.

I'm trying to find a teach abroad summer program that is not only free, but pays me. So far the free ones are in Rwanda, and that might stress out mom too much if I spent the summer teaching refugees in Darfur. On the other hand, I know I'd lose a lot of weight.

I wish I could go to Long Island - I'd visit the Barefoot Contessa. (That is where "the Hamptons" are, right?)

I am looking forward to college classes beginning soon.

nobody posting except me!

How come nobody is blogging?
We dropped off a load of ajax/bleach products in monroe NJ, now we are picking up paper products in Long Island NY, it took about 3 hours to get here due to traffic. We will be taking the load to Savannah GA. It's freezing here, it's about 20 degrees, but I think the wind chill must be below zero.
Well next time I log on I hope to see some bloggs besides my own.
love
jane and mark

just an update

we are still here in NY..a small town named Rome. We found out there is a casino resort near by with free shuttle service,so we went over there yesterday and lost 60 bucks in the slots...then came back to the truck. We are still waiting for a dispatch. We don't have a trailer, and it is not good to drive in these conditions without one, so we are just sittin.
we have gone out to play in the snow a few times and walk around to get some exercise.
I am going to send usxpress a messege in a minute to see if they can get us out of here today.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We wound up taking the load that was going to Maine- to NJ since it did not deliver until the 3rd. We spent the night in Kearny NJ in a walmart parking lot. They gave us a load from Jersey City rail road - to Marcy NY, where we are now. There is about 10 inches of snow on the ground and it is snowing now, I think they are expecting 3 to 6 inches. We are waiting for a dispatch, no telling how long it will take since it is a holiday, we could be here all day.I am glad I brought my old snow boots I bought at the thrift store about 14 yrs ago.
Santa brought me and Mark each a cold, one in the chest for Mark and a headcold for me! We both feel like crap....but I am still gonna go out in the snow.

I am not good at new years resolutions....so I won't make one!
We are going to Mom and Dads on 1/9/08 for mom's birthday on the 10th.

I have nick named fritz and brutus to Tinkle and sprinkle, ha ha.
Happy new year everyone!
